Leisure activities in the Algarve The Algarve is a popular tourist destination situated in the southern region of Portugal. Algarve`s reputation as a great destination for tourists is mainly due to its pleasant Mediterranean climate, spectacular scenery and beautiful beaches. Most of the beaches have close proximity to entertainment hotspots and leisure facilities, providing the perfect opportunity for enjoying a lively and exciting visit. The Algarve is also blessed with a natural landscape which offers a stunning panorama. Amidst its hills and plains, visitors will find many places of great ecological interest, rich in biodiversity and ecosystems. Golfing The Algarve boasts over 300 days of sunny weather each year making it a premier European golf destination. Winters are mild and golfers from northern European countries can enjoy warm, sun-filled days at a time when most of the courses home are deemed to be unplayable. With over 25 golf courses along the coastline and all within one and a half hours drive from Faro International Airport, the region is indeed a golfer`s paradise. Algarve has been a magnet for many discerning golfers due to its accessibility from most European capitals. Outdoor activities The Algarve also offers many outdoors activities for adventure visitors. You can indulge in guided tours including hiking, mountain climbing and nature walks. Visitors can also their hand at mountain climbing and canoeing. Foia, at an attitude of 900 metres, and overlooking the western Algarve and southwest coast offers a great location for mountain climbing and downhill sports. Ideal conditions for canoeing can be found on the border of Monchique county. Visitors can also take bus-tours and explore the natural charms of the region, set in a landscape full of spectacular sceneries. For the lovers of extreme sports, they can try their hand on ripriding (cable sliding) and rappelling. The ideal location for rappelling and ripriding is, however, the Foia. Water sports Back to the beach and water, there are a variety of water sports to enjoy. Sailing is one of the hot favourites. You can hire a yacht and enjoy plenty of sailing. Visitors can also try their hands at fishing, with the chance of catching something worth of boasting about. There are plenty of places to hire fishing equipment. Other water sports available in the Algarve include windsurfing, pedal kayaking, scuba diving and surfing. You can also take a cruise and watch the spectacular dolphins. Nightlife To fill those hours of darkness before hitting the beach again, there are plenty of nightlife spots. You can go clubbing at Albufera or enjoy a pint at one of the bars. Night life is a norm in Algarve and you can dine al fresco beneath the stars. You can also try your hand at black jack in Monte Gordo or any of the other casinos dotting the town but be careful not to blow your all your holiday money! With its reputation as a low cost destination, you should be readily able to identify cheap flights to the Algarve. With fantastic weather most of the year and mild winters you can visit Algarve at any time in the year, though the best time is between March and November. |
